Surprise! I've registered as a guest participant for the Spring One Room Challenge by Better Homes and Garden. I know, the girl who is spotty at best with posting on social media has signed up for a challenge with weekly blog posts and lots of insta behind the scenes, how could this possibly go right? WELL I'm determined to be more consistent, especially with the blog. I want you to have a place to land to read about my process, find plans, and steps for projects - this Challenge is the perfect way to ease into that!
Week one is all about getting started and finalizing plans for your space. I started on the home office at the beginning of April so I've had a little bit of a head start... to be fair I had no intention of joining the ORC until the day it launched. I was naively hoping I'd be farther along in the office by the time the challenged started - but I'm not so I couldn't think of a reason not to join in on the fun! Ok, I'm gonna get you caught up to where I'm at and give you a look ahead over what's going down the next 8 weeks.
First up is why this room? Well I laid it all out in this post about designing a functional work from home space. Long story short, my previous home office (pictured above) was not serving its purpose and I was working everywhere in my house besides that room! I asked myself four questions to start the design process:
What do I need this room to be? I need my office to be structured.
What is its overall function in the home? I need my office to be more formal than the rest of the home.
How do I get it to that point? I need to remove "cozy" and implement professional. (Sell couch, install built-ins).
How do I want to feel in this room? I want to feel productive in this room.
I then went to Pinterest and began sourcing inspiration pictures, always keeping in mind the other spaces in my home. I'm trying to be better about flow and pulling in similar design elements (i.e. paint colors, wall treatments, etc). I found A LOT of inspiration from Studio McGee.
After I had a general idea of what I wanted in the home office and how I wanted it to look I started making a list of things I needed to do and the order it needed to happen:
Remove carpet and old shiplap
Install Luxury Vinyl Flooring
Plan and measure for built in
Narrow closet rough opening
Build cabinet boxes
New closet doors and new entrance door
Install trim and baseboards
Paint
Styling touches
Currently I'm at #5 - building cabinet boxes for the built ins.
This first week I'm going to focus hard on wrapping up the build of the lower cabinets - so doors and drawers. I also need to install drywall from where I narrowed my closet rough opening... when I had Mike's truck to get supplies the store was OUT?! Like what?! So I need to go to another hardware store and buy drywall before I can install the final base cabinet. Also, I'm taking some PTO this week so I may even get to starting the top of the built in?! I don't want to get over my head too quickly so if not it's no biggie... that's what week two is for!
Week one: wrap up lower cabinet build and finally install drywall for closet
Week two: top of built in - bookshelves, doors, shiplap
Week three: install new closet doors and entrance door
Week four: install trim and baseboards
Week five: paint built in
Week six: fresh coat of paint for whole room
Week seven: diy art, install new light, hang t.v.
Week eight: wrap up! Style for reveal!
Feeling pretty good with my plans for the next eight weeks. I'm sure things will come up and I'll have to pivot... that's to be expected for every project, so make sure you're following along on Instagram stories to catch all the behind the scenes!
What do you think of the plans? Let me know what you're most looking forward to seeing!
